General Motors Co. has set its sights on the moon. Partnering with Lockheed Martin, GM will be an integral part of expanding the U.S. space program as the industry leaders participate in the development of the next-generation lunar rover. Astronauts will use the new vehicle to navigate the moon’s surface.
Astronauts will be heading back to the moon as part of the Artemis program from NASA. With assistance from various rovers, the astronauts will explore the moon’s surface, conducting experiments to help the world gain a deeper understanding of the moon and space.
The lunar vehicle designed by GM and Lockheed Martin will be unlike any other lunar vehicle ever created. The two industry leaders were tasked to incorporate unique capabilities into their lunar vehicle that will help the astronauts achieve the space program’s goals on the moon.
“Surface mobility is critical to enable and sustain long-term exploration of the lunar surface. These next-generation rovers will dramatically extend the range of astronauts as they perform high-priority science investigation on the Moon that will ultimately impact humanity’s understanding of our place in the solar system,” said Rick Ambrose, executive vice president, Lockheed Martin Space.
