With stunning waterfalls, scenic hiking trails, and plenty of comfortable accommodations, Cumberland Falls State Resort Park is one of the Bluegrass State’s natural wonders. And since it’s located just under three hours away from La Grange, it’s an ideal road-trip destination for nature-loving families.
Water activities
With glistening streams and soaring waterfalls, Cumberland Falls is perfect for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. You’ll find bass, panfish, catfish, and roughfish inhabiting the local rivers.
Hiking
With 17 miles of hiking trails to explore, Cumberland Falls is great for active families. Whether you’ve got little one in tow or you’re an advanced hiker looking for a challenge, you’ll be sure to find an ideal fit among the park’s 13 trails. And if you’re looking to do some backpacking, hit the Moonbow Trail — it joins up with some of Daniel Boone National Forest’s finest backpacking trails.
Horseback riding
Even if you (or your little ones) have never ridden a horse before, Cumberland Falls State Resort Park is the perfect place to give horseback riding a shot. Guests age 6 and up are welcome to experience a 45-minute ride through the park for just $20 per rider. While personal horses aren’t permitted on the trails in the park, you can bring your own horse to explore trails in the surrounding area, like the Big South Fork National River and Daniel Boone National Forest.
Gem mining
You and your kids will have the chance to pan for gemstones in the sluice located just outside of the gift shop. Just sift the rough material to uncover quartz crystals, moonstone, rubies, emeralds, amethyst, and more.
