Although the “Greatest Two Minutes in Sports” attracts nearly 170,000 attendees every year, the 145th Kentucky Derby isn’t the only exciting thing to do in Louisville the first weekend in May. Here are some additional pastimes to supplement the derby itself.
Bourbon Experience
Hailed as the Gateway to Bourbon Country, Louisville is a popular spot for bourbon fans to frequent. It’s not surprising that one of this location’s events is the Bourbon Experience. Visit local distilleries to sample a variety of brews. You can also choose between one-, two-, or three-day experiences depending on your preference.
Great Steamboat Race
The Belle of Louisville takes on the Belle of Cincinnati once again at the 56th Great Steamboat Race at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1. It’s a great way to kick off Derby weekend if you’ll be in town a few days ahead of the race on Saturday. This event features two boats competing in five challenges that range from calliope contests to river maneuvers. Tickets are available to ride the boats during the race, though you can also witness this event from the riverbanks.
The Pegasus® Parade
A 64-year-old tradition, the Republic Bank Pegasus® Parade is a two-hour-long procession that you won’t want to miss. Head to Broadway on Thursday, May 2, at 5 p.m to catch this family-friendly festivity. Marching bands, inflatable characters, unique floats, equestrian units, and celebrities are just some of the reasons to catch this event.
Whether you’re in town a few days early or just for derby day, there are a plethora of fun pastimes to enjoy in Louisville to enhance your derby weekend experience. Contact us at Champion Chevrolet Buick GMC in La Grange, KY for more local happenings to check out during your visit.
