GM Defense recently provided the first Infantry Squad Vehicle to the U.S. Army. This special delivery to the U.S. Army was just the first of many since GM Defense plans to support the production of over 2,000 vehicles and manufacture 649 ISVs.
A subsidiary of General Motors, GM Defense was reestablished in 2017, and the ISV delivery was the first major delivery since then. The delivery is part of a $214.3 million contract with the U.S. Army from this past June.
The ISV is a nimble, highly capable off-road vehicle that can carry an infantry squad of nine Soldiers, along with all of their equipment. The ISV was designed after the midsize truck architecture of the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2. GM took this award-winning structure and added a huge number of commercial-off-the-shelf parts to ensure these vehicles would be worthy of serving the U.S. Army.
In order to meet the military requirements, the ISV was designed to be light enough to get sling loaded by a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter and small enough to get transported by air in a CH-47 Chinook helicopter. Plus, it’s still rugged, agile, and capable of providing quick ground transportation.
