The GMC Sierra 1500 Denali will be the latest model to receive General Motors’ Super Cruise™ hands-free driver-assist technology, the industry’s leading and first autonomous driving technology. When this technology arrives for the Sierra in late model year 2022, it will even work while the Sierra is towing a trailer or a boat.
So how does it work? Super Cruise™ relies on an advanced driver attention system to ensure you are still attentive at the wheel, even when the vehicle is doing the driving. The tech also boasts LiDAR map data and utilizes sensors, real-time cameras, and GPS to ensure the vehicle drives in the correct lane, at the correct speed, and interacts safely with other vehicles.
If the driver attention system’s camera (which is housed in the steering column) detects the driver isn’t paying attention, the system immediately prompts the driver to resume control of the vehicle for safe operation.
As of today, Super Cruise™ can operate on more than 200,000 miles of roads in North America, but General Motors continues to expand the grid.
